The circus and Hokusai woodblock prints inspired the 6-piece series of watercolor illustrations of imaginative gardens — Verdant Garden.
I like to design whimsical worlds with organic objects. Natural elements, inspired by carousels, Ferris wheels and circus tents, seed every nook and cranny of my garden scapes.
Hokusai was a Japanese artist known for his ukiyo-e paintings and woodblock prints. Ukiyo-e is a genre of Japanese art which grew from the 17th through 19th centuries. The artists in this movement arranged space simply. They developed a unique way of portraying reality that rarely included much depth and dimensionality. Instead, shallow perspectives, flat areas of color, strong shapes and bold lines characterize the art.
Ukiyo-e focused on the ordinary things of life and the beauty of nature. I cultivate both themes as sources of inspiration for my art and life.
